Rep. Takano’s Legislation to Rename Riverside Post Office After Waudieur “Woodie” Rucker-Hughes Passes the House
Riverside, CA – Today, Rep. Mark Takano (D-Calif.) released this statement following the House passage of his legislation to designate the facility of the United States Postal Service located at 4150 Chicago Avenue in Riverside, CA as the “Woodie Rucker-Hughes Post Office Building.”
“It was a joyous moment when my colleagues in the House unanimously voted to pass my bill to rename the Riverside Post Office after an icon in our community who I was lucky to call a friend, Woodie Rucker-Hughes,” said Rep. Mark Takano. “Woodie dedicated her life to social justice and civil rights, to removing barriers to education to ensure students receive a quality education, and to making our community a better place for all. I’m pleased to know that we will be honoring her legacy in this way. I hope the Senate will advance this legislation so that her kindness and dedication will continue to inspire generations to come.”
Woodie Rucker-Hughes was a history teacher at John W. North High School and an administrator for the Riverside Unified School District, and she also served as the NAACP Riverside Charter President. Woodie passed away in 2018 after leading a life under the mantra of “never let it rest until the good is better and the better is best.”
